Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of The Anointing of the Sick is available each Saturday morning at the 8:30 a parish Mass for those who are entering the hospital the coming week and who wish to be anointed. Please let the Celebrant of the Mass know before Mass begins.

Anyone who has a family member who is seriously ill is invited to notify the Rectory so that a priest may visit the ill family member and bring Sacraments of the Eucharist, Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick to the ailing family member. These Sacraments are for the strengthening and consolation of the ill person and, sometime, the healing of the physical illness as well as the healing of the spirit of the person.  If someone is seriously ill, please do not delay in making the call to the rectory.

Frequently Asked Questions about Anointing of the Sick

When should a person receive the anointing of the sick?
The Church now invites those who have a sickness to present themselves for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick also those who are old and are in danger of injury or sickness which compromises their health.
However, the Sacrament need not be repeated for the same illness, unless that illness becomes much worse. The Church finds there is no need for multiple anointings just like the there is no need for reception of Communion more than once in the day unless there are different Eucharistic celebrations. The quality of our faith in reception of the sacraments is the important element not the quantity of receptions.

What type of sickness is considered worthy of anointing of the sick?
People with a heart condition or high blood pressure surely may be feeling fine but Anointing of the Sick may be a good way to bring Christ into their daily concerns about diet and exercise and all the other measures of responsible stewardship for continued good health.

The illness does not have to be life threatening, but it should be an illness. You do not have to prove your illness to anyone, but should feel that it is appropriate for you.

Those who were going to have an operation are good candidates.

If there is a serious physical illness of condition in "end-stage" please let us know to come to the house to receive this sacrament it you have not been anointed already.
